No start after carb kit install '36-Stromberg 97

36 with Stromberg 97: I put in a carb kit from C&G, had the top of the fuel pump off to clean slight sediment and valves. The car will only run 15-30 seconds with gas poured in the carb. Pump lost prime? Did I put valves in pump back wrong? I put the valve with the cone facing down in the deeper hole and the cone facing up in the short hole of the pump.

Tim, The valve closest to the pump outlet, should be installed so that the flatter surface is visible and the other valve is installed with the cone up. It sounds like you have them correct. Operate the pump by cranking the engine or by hand and check for vacuum at the inlet port and pressure at the output port. This will tell you if you have the valves installed correctly. If your valves are installed correctly, and the pump is operating when the starter is engaged, you might have a vacuum leak on the input to the pump. This can come from a leak in the flex line or a leak at any of the connections or at the top of the fuel pump.

Pump valves/ sounds like you dont have the correct FP for a 36 late or early. 36 pump dont have valves like you discribe [encased in a brass housing] #6 have a phonlic 6 sided disc,with a small spring under or over them. I have the correct pumps and or valves you need. Call me 1-203-260-5945 torrow as im about ready to hang it up for the nite. ken ct.

Thanks Ken but I already ordered a new pump from Drake as I couldn't tighten the bolt on the pump cover. I tried running a tap to clean the threads but still could not tighten the bolt sufficiently.

Tim, the fuel pump from Bob Drake will not be correct for a 36 car, but this is only important if you are going to have the car judged at an Early Ford V-8 Club National Meet.

Why is the Drake pump not correct? Looked right in the photo. Who has the correct pump? I thought he was a club member selling correct stuff.

Tim, Bob Drake and other vendors that sell new fuel pumps sell the version that was used on the 41-46 cars. The inlet and outlet ports are on the same level and the cover has little projections to help line it up. Here is an excerpt from my article on fuel pumps in the V-8 Times: The 68-9350 (fig 2.) was introduced in late 1936. This pump was used from 1936 though 1940. It has a larger 2 1/4" body diameter, the top is more rounded. The outlet port is still 1/4" lower than the input port. The parts catalogs up to 1940 show this pump with the hex head sediment bowl drain. The 1940 catalogs show this pump with a petcock type wing nut drain. I am not sure when this type of drain was introduced. The 41-46 pump works fine on a 36 car and has a better valve arrangement than the 36-40 fuel pump and is my preference for Touring Class car.

36's used 2 diff pumps / early 36 used a small domed pump 2" across the top and a late 36 used one 2 1/4 across the top. Has inlet and outlet openings off-set by 3/8" and top has no indexing tabs [4] on the top.Also a "T" handle petcock to drain. I have all kinds of the Ford pumps in rebuilt form on original pumpe. All pumps sold by the big-box vendors come in from China.Buy usa stuff/ ken ct 1-203-260-5945 cell
