I removed my '39 starter; after reinstallation it just spins but doesn't engage. What did I do wrong when I put it back in?(Starter bench tested as "OK")

did you put grease or oil on the bendix "thread" or anywhere on it?? if so clean it off-spray brake cleaner on it, any oil, etc will not let it work correctly

My bad! I replaced the battery - now starter OK! the battery was a new reproduction, charged to 7.2 V, so I mistakenly assumed it was OK. Now to figure out the battery.

Be sure the starter has a good ground. A poor ground can mimic a low battery, and not spin the starter hard enough to throw the drive into the ring gear. Also be sure that the input terminal of the starter terminal is clean and tight, for the same reason.
