  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. Remember someone talking about where to look on a differential housing for markings indicating the rear-end gear ratio. My search did not find the discussion.

Would like to know where to look on my '47 Ford. If someone changed the rear-end, could they have retained the existing differential housing - thus negating any factory markings on the housing ?

I did read some discussions about how to field-test the drive train to figure out the installed ratio, but thought I'd ask about the markings first.

Thanks, Dan

On 33-34 rears it is stamped into the center rib on the bottom front of the center section . Most common being 9-37 for 4.11 ratio . No clue on newer stuff like yours but it is worth a look .

Thanks David J .... I have a strange situation back there; different for your vintage. "Classic Car Data ... " says my 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe V8 Series 79A has a 3.54 ratio rear end. But take a look at my attachment. There is no "back plate" on the DIFF. The DIFF is shaped like a round drum that is oriented parallel to the rear wheels. And in front of it is an 8 inch torque tube spacer which then connects to a Borg-warner R10B-1G OD. Someone installed a nice OD assemly here and I find it hard to believe a 3.54 rear end would be coupled with it. Also, off the line without OD my first gear pretty much reaches its limit at 15 mph and second gear isn't for the long-haul either. So I would speculate that with an OD, I might have a 4.11 rear end. When the snow melts I'll do the rotation calculation test. Thanks for responding.

Same basic setup through 1948. Look on the rib on the bottom of the center section just behind the torque tube . That's where it is on 33-34 .

There are important things to know befpre installing an aftermarket overdrive. They are the rear end gearing, and the amount of reduction available with the OD. I have a 3-78 rear in my '47 convertible.. I installed a 33 percent OD, which is fine at over 45-50 mph on the hiway. In town, it is too much, and must be shut off. It is likely a similar OD would be a poor choice with a 3-54 rear with a similar rear. The object is to have the engine running about 2500 rpm, the "power point", in OD to run 60-70 on the open hiway, yet have decent power in town traffic.

Another view of the rear axle marking on a '46 Ford.

Thanks to Norm and Flatheadfan - those photos really help. Attaching photos of the Borg-Warner R10-1G OD. Casing also has the markings "SB3" and "2 J152" but have not found anyone who knows what those indicate. Installation looks very professional. Did the factory or Dealers ever install B-W units ? I have not checked rpm vs. mph when engaged yet.
