I'm going to replace the seal around my '38 closed car windshield frame. I've read comments that some seals don't fit or generally aren't acceptable. I hear that one supplier generally supplies good rubber but his windshield seal is not good. I don't want to bash any supplier, but don't want to try them all to see who's is best. I don't show for points but do want a flexible seal that keeps rain and wind out. Who has the best replacement seal? Your guidance is appreciated

Most of the seals produced in this country are made by Dennis Carpenter. Just double check that they send the correct seal for your car. We have used Carpenter's seals for a long time, but received the wrong one in one instance. They are a quality supplier, and make the seals themselves, which are sold by others, such as Drake.

No not all of the windshield seals are made by Carpenter,Drake has an entirely different one. I don't know if he(Drake) makes his in house or has someone else make them but his fit my 37 excellent .Carpenters was my first choice but it was not a good fit as was all of his seals for my 37 coupe, they were all returned. I am not knocking Carpenter, only this part or parts on a 37 Ford coupe,I have other parts from him that I chose over Drakes.

I am nearly 100% certain that Drake no longer produces anything in house. Regardless, the seal he sells (with his name on it) fits pretty good. I have heard disappointment over his "improved design" so if it remains an option, I'd stick with the seal that is supposed to be a copy of the original. It is imperative that you clean out the channel very, very well before attempting to install the new seal.

Looking at Drake's web catalog, they only offer one seal and it is $50. C & G offers two seals one for $20 and one is "new design" with molded corners. The new design has "BD" at the end of the part number and costs $50, so I suspect it is Drakes. Kube, the frame I am getting ready to install is about as good as it gets to be original. The rubber on it appeared to be original and was turning gummy. I was able to get most of it out, then had to work on getting the barbed edge out. There are a couple of spots of flaky of rust in the seal area but overall it is very good. I'm hesitant to stick a sand blaster down in the seal area for fear of somehow damaging the chrome.

I think you are wise to NOT bead blast. I made a small tool that mimics the shape of that groove in your frame. It allows me to "drag" it through the entire circumference and be certain there are no old rubber pieces remaining. If the new seal does not seat completely you allow a chance of leakage in that area. this is never a fun job, but done correctly, you'll be proud to have achieved its completion successfully.

We use the molded corner type. The original requires cemnenting the corners. I'm a messy cementer, so the other type is better.

I called C & G and the molded corner model is a Drake part but has been out of stock for a while and no idea when it will be available. The available seal is a Carpenter part. I ordered it, so we will see how it fits. This is my first time on this model seal, so I might not recognize a bad fit when I see it.

I'm glad to hear it fit well, makes me feel better. My seal came in the mail yesterday. Good service from C & G AND the US Postal service.
