What would cause a whistle on my 239 59a and cause engine to blow black smoke and only run with choke on??, plus hard to start. Johna

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Plug the line going to the wipers from the manifold base, and check the carb base gasket.

Buy a mechanic's stethoscope and unscrew the tube that goes to the transducer from the ear pieces. So you have an ear piece in each ear the "y" and a short piece of hose. Works very well to locate leaks.

John A I would bet dollars to doughnuts it's a fairly serious vacuum leak. With the engine idling, spray a small bit of ether in any suspect area. When the RPMs quickly increase, you found the leak. Barney
