I have a distributor with 68 marked on the keyed end of the shaft and weights. I have another that looks like 11A on the end of the shaft (I have not taken this one apart yet). What do the differing numbers mean?

The 68 indicates the internal cam and weights are from 1936 design and the 11A indicates the internals are from 1941 design which is slightly improved to allow a couple of degrees more advance at a lower RPM.

Thank you. Would there be any problems installing the 11A distributor on a stock 1940 car?

There are no problems when installing a 1941 Ford distributor on a 1940 Ford engine. The external mounting features of these two years are identical. Only the internal advance mechanisms differ.
