Following Mac VanPelts excellent "ins and out of early Ford transmissions". However, when reassembling the mainshaft, there is too much fore/aft movement,(about 1/8 inch. I installed the 7063 spacer ring, but at the rear of the mainshaft, at the 7080 oil baffle, there is a groove that might hold a snap ring. Is this the problem?

In taking apart some early trans, I have found two oil slingers to tighten up the main shaft.

There is no snap ring on the main shaft by the 7080 it is possible the 7080 was loose and wore into the shaft. are you checking fore/aft with the rear bearing retainer 5099 & 7085 in place? is the front retainer 7050 also in place? Have you checked the thickness of all the snap ring to make sure they are of proper thickness ( 0.075") some snap rings are too thin. After you bolt on the U-joint the 7080 should be tight on the shaft

Thanks for your response! Did not realize that the u joint had to be attached to the trans to take up the play. Thank you again.
