For those using turn signals, are your wires connected to the flasher through a plug-in socket or directly to the prongs? I suspect if I wanted to use a socket to prevent any possible shorts, the standard headlight type would work or I could just wrap e-tape around each prong.

You could solder the wires to the flasher, but a socket is better. If you use the socket, it'll make it easier to change flashers, and the flashers do go bad. Here's a picture: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg264/rcrispd/turnsignalsocket.jpg You could use a headlight socket, if it fits. Richard

I use the socket. Then it's easier to replace the flasher when needed. Socket with pigtails can be bought at any auto parts store.
