The guy who was handling the sale for the little old lady came within an inch of getting the tail end creamed by a new f150 as he backed it out of the garage. Other than a slight little bit of steering lash, she tracks along nicely and is pretty good in light traffic. I locked em up once when a yellow light surprised me but she slid straight. no pulling this time. I think I'm in love. I'll pull the drums off tomorrow and look thing s over. Is there a rule for how much space to leave between the drums and the pads when adjusting? I'll pick up a brake spoon tomorrow, though I'm starting to think it doesn't need anything right now. Bill

I noticed your 53 F100, looks like a very original truck, I'm sure you will enjoy it for a long time! I've been working on a 53 F100 panel that is all original with the flathead V8 and I am reassembling it after last running in 1985. I have all the old motormounts, after reassembling the engine and installing it in the truck I am finding that the fan is located too high and slightly off center of the original radiator shroud. I saw your picture of the engine and am looking for some help determining why the alignment is off. I dreally don't want to cut the shroud, I have checked belts, seem to be the correct ones, the large one even has the Ford number on it. I attached a picture of the engine as if looked when I first brought it home. Any help from others familiar with the 53 F100 Flatheads would be very appreciated.

that motor looks very original. Are those EAB heads? Friend I'll be happy to take whatever measurements you think might help you out. gotta love a panel truck. I guess she'll do 65 all day even with these 3.92 gears. Bill

Chances are either the radiator is not stock and/or the radiator mount is not in place, perhaps because of bent frame horns.

The fan bolts to the generator bracket. Make sure the gnerator is sitting squarely on the intake manifold. The generator bracket sits down in a recess of the front of the manifold. Make sure nothing is broken on the front of the manifold that would allow the generator to be out of alignment. The fan bracket can be adjusted up or down, but also must sit squarely against the bracket for the generator.

Thanks for the response, The heads are marked 8RT. This engine was in this truck and running back in 85. The previuos owner removed the engine, radiator, transmission, and had the shortblock rebuilt. I was able to find all the parts and clean and reassemble. The radiator, shroud, transmision, clutch assembly, and all engine accessories are original. Even the motor mounts. I had to pull the large fan belt off the crank pulley (rusted in place). I've checked the rear mounts although they are cracked and somewhat squished they do not appear to be lowering the rear (I thought that if too low they would raise the front). The intake to generator mounting is not worn and looks square and the same with the fan bracket. The front motor mount was shown in the first picture I sent, it mounts to the front of the block in one spot with the 4 bolts, and has about 1/2" clearance under front crankshaft pulley. I had no water pumps, I bought 2 and had to have wide pulleys installed and the belts are running from crank to fan and crank to water pumps and generator. With all assembled using the old belts that were with the truck, the fan is still too high and will hit the upper part of the shound by about 3/4". The radiator support looks straight and centered, the mounting of the radiator has four captured nuts that line up with the four in the radiator, with virtually no movement. The radiator shroud has 3 holes down each side that are lining up with the same on the radiator, the shroud has a curved lip at the top, a 19" diameter opening, that is set down about 4-5" below the bottom of the radiator, the opening is slightly offset to the left abour 3/4". Looking online at any pictures of original trucks all is lookng fine, most have had the shroud removed or modified. I'll attach a few more pictures. Thanks for all the help!

More pictures. this one shows the shround mounted, the fan is lined up in the middle of the opening and using the belt that came with the truck you might be able to see how loose it is. I stuck a wrench above the pulley to show how loose it is at this adjustment. The fan mount is nearly all the way to it's lowest adjustment on the generator bracket. This belt is approx 1.5" smaller around the outside from replacement belts from dennis carpenter and one other source. The factory belt guide gives a belt size of 36.81 x 3/4 this old blet measures 35.5" on the outside. I have been checking every thing I can think of and have scratched all the hair off my head! Thanks!

The pictures will be very helpful. Perhaps a measurment of the height of the front motor mount to the crossmember, mine looks correct but I'll try anything, and a measurement ot the outide diameter of the fan belt running from fan to crank pulley. Thanks for your help, Richard
