My 36 coupe shows very little ware,original paint and upholstery yet it has a 1937 block. has any one ever heard of the factory using that block late in the 36 run.

I've never heard of it,but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Problem is to prove it happened you have to have some documentation from Ford.

Most likely an early service replacement. Once the '37 21 stud 221 ci engine became available in '37 production, FoMoCo used that as a service replacement for '36 and earlier. This could have been done using '32-'36 heads with water pumps mounted in heads and water pump block off plates in front of block or '37 heads and '37 water pumps in front of block.

My 1936 Ford also has a 1937 engine with 1936 heads and water pumps. Ford provided block off plates to this engine to cover the area where the '37 water pumps go. This '37 engine has the large inserted bearings (LB) Also, this is a very smooth running engine and at idle there is no vibration and with dual Smitty's it provides a beautiful sound.

1936 was a transitional year for Ford in a number of ways. Early models had the babbit bearing blocks, while the later vehicles had the insert bearings that became standard in the '37's. These were known as "running changes", a common Ford practice over the years.
