One problem area COULD be the shift top mechanism. They usually need to be rebuilt with new spring and detent caps. This is worth the effort since you do not have to remove the transmission. With the top of the transmission removed you can measure the backlash of the intermediate gear (2nd) If this is out of spec. then the transmission has to be removed and disassembled. There are other factors that can effect the shift. Mac VanPelt in OH has parts as well as other suppliers

I think Charlie,NY. can fix up the cover on that w/ a double detent arrangement. 1-716-662-9159. Hes on the fordbarn.com website all the time.. Great guy on trans. ken ct.
