I have a Ford transmission bought on Craig's list, claimed to be 39, but could not verify year claim prior to purchase. Appears in good condition superficially, except needs a new reverse idler gear. Going to use it in modified 30s Ford. Tranny number (star)I8-2,536,073(star). This number on VanPelt website shows this number to be a 1936, and they do not differentiate a V8-60hp and V8-85hp for 1936. Checking Mac's (Ohio) catalog, they only list a spur gear for 36, but my reverse idler is clearly a helical cut, so I am assuming the tranny is either from a 60hp or 85hp Model, which apparently had different transmissions, although not sure if that reconciles with the year. My bottom line question is to do a definitive ID on this tranny, so I can get the correct reverse idler and any other parts I may need. Appreciate any information on this.

You have a 1936 Ford transmission for a 85 hp engine. There was no 60 hp engine in 1936. The 60 hp engine was a 1937 model for the U.S.market.Sometime in 1936 Ford went to helical cut gears. Helical cut gears could be correct for your transmission.

Your transmission could have a later gear set installed. I would check with a phone call to Mac Van Pelt. He can tell you what to look for and then supply the correct parts.

While the previous posts are correct, there is a slight chance that the case is in fact the same case as used with the '39 transmission. The 1937 transmission case continued through 1939, and is more desirable than the earlier case due to an improved sturdier casting with better clearances for clutch and gears. The serial number will not confirm which case you have, but the part number on the case will. Basic part number will be 7005, with the prefix 48 likely for your 1935-36 case, and 78 for the 1937-39 case. As said earlier, the gears may be early or late, regardless of the case itself. Mac is the man to identify the internals of your case, which must not be mix and match with other year sets.
