New guy again - My F1 pops out of second gear when not under load. Is there a clutch adjustment that can help with this or do I need to replace the clutch? Thanks for any help/suggestions that you can offer. Hal

Popping out of gear usually means you have worn synchros in the transmission and a transmission rebuild is in order....

Do you have a floor shift or column shift?

hi F1 does it do in backing off the throttle, or does it do it when you go foward with hand off the shifter, it could be the pilot bearing is worn, leaving the input shaft wobbles making it jump out of gear. I would drain the oil in the trans and check for signs of brass particles and or steel, use a magnet to see what sticks this wil tell you the condition of the trans, IS THE TRANS NOISY ? growling and other noises, ? more in information might help. like someone suggested it might need a rebuild, if it is a column shifter, the bushing could be worn, not fully in engaging the gear,? hope this helps 37 Ragtopman, Maine

When my 1937 used to do what you are talking about, it was the thrust washer that was worn or broken. To replace that the transmission has to be dropped and taken apart.

It is a floor shift. It jumps out when letting off of the gas petal when in second gear. No other noises noted. Not a problem in first or third gear. Thanks again to all for the information. I think a rebuild is in my future. Hal

On a floor shift, the detent springs can be weak or the detent pins worn. I suggest giving Mac Van Pelt a call and see if he can tell you what to look for. http://vanpeltsales.com/ These parts can be replaced with just taking off the transmission cover plate to expose the top of the transmission.
