My 49 flathead is stock excepting headers which were on the car when I bought it. It performs nicely in all phases of operation, starting, idle, pulling smoothly from very low speed, and at moderate speed going down the highway. The carburetor is stamped only on one side, with Ford USA. Nothing else anywhere. It has a metal tag attached which reads AUTOLITE 8RT 96LO F. It was rebuilt by a reputable shop two years ago. Both exhaust extensions are covered with black sooty residue inside indicating the engine is running rich. I understand the most common cause is float level set too high or a deteriorated washer at the power valve (whatever that is) I am ignorant re carburetors and have resisted addressing the problem for that reason and nice performance by the engine. Should I just let sleeping dogs lie???

If you’re not comfortable dicking around with your carburetor, take it back to the shop that rebuilt it two years ago. If you want to give it a go yourself, start with the power valve, purchased from Daytonaparts.com. Don’t mess with anything else.

Excessive idling can cause the black, sooty residue or it could be due to running rich. The only adjustments are for the idle. The speed should be set to 450rpm and the mixture screws to the highest vacuum. You can look down the throat of the carburetor when the engine is idling and see if you can see fuel dribbling out. If you do, your carburetor needs servicing.

My '46 Coupe with the stock 59A engine, was running rich with sooty plugs. The power valve was okay, fuel pressure was 3psi, and no mater how I set the float, I couldn't correct the engine from running rich. I sent the carb and pump to Charley in New York for rebuild. When I got the parts back, there was a bag with two #50 jets in it. I emailed Charlie to find out why the jets were changed, and was told that at some point in time the jets were drilled oversize, and he replaced them with the correct ones. The plugs are now a nice light chocolate color, and fuel mileage has improved. Also the pump he rebuilt was tagged 2.5 psi. Sometimes it is the little things that only a pro would find.
