I am working on removing the hood on my 1950 ford sedan. My question, is it better to remove the bolts at the hood or at the firewall/cowl ? Thanks in advance.

Remove the bolts from the hood but mark the positions of the hinges on the hood very well before removing them so you will be able to put them back on in the exact same places.

If you are happy with the fit of the hood, I would do as car crazy recommends and mark all the edges of the hinge with tape so it will go back in the same location. If it's going to be a while, then some people will drill small holes in the hinge thru the inner structure of the hood and use those holes to align the hood when you re-assemble it.
