Hello, This might be a dumb question; but is there any one right way to mount fog lamps on a 47 merc sedan? i bought a pair of unity mercury fog lights and i am not sure how they should mount. they came with a bracket on them that tilts one to the left and one to the right. it seems like i should drill in the apron behind the bumper. i have seen it that way and some that look like they are straight up and down?? anybody have an answer?? Thanks, Deric

Deric, I have seem Mercs with the fog lights in the grill or mounted on the front apron. Here is a photo of a Merc with fog lights mounted on the apron.

Thanks Tom... i think that it was i am going to do. i wasnt sure if i should drill a hole in the apron but that seems to be what i have to do. On another note.. should the bumper guards for a 47 Merc have the lines on the top. i have seen some with and some without. I wasn't sure if the lines were an upgrade piece at the time?? Thanks

The Early 47's had the lines and the later 47 and 48 did not have the lines. Waymon Brownlee in GA or Rusty Davis in MI would be able to tell you better about the changeover. Generally an early 47 would have the full length hood side stainless, a painted grille surround with 3 chrome plated bars on both sides of the surround and other 46 features. The later 47 would have a chrome grille surround and short hood side stainless. The Mercury in the grill would have a black background instead of the red background found on the earlier cars.

I am not sure about the bumper wing tips, but I think all of them came with the lines. I have never seen any without the lines and the parts catalog lists them as an accessory for the 42-46 Mercury and not the 47-48 Mercury. I don't have the list of authorized accessories for post war Mercury's, so they may have been authorized for the 47-48 Mercury. I would check with Rusty Davis about your accessories if you intend to have your car judged. Incorrect accessories will result in a point deduction.

Deric, Originally the Fog lamps for the 46-48 Mercury were the same as used on 46-48 Ford. They were attached through the front aprons and had brackets that mounted underneath the apron and wrapped around the bumper arm. This was to prevent the aprons from tearing due to vibration. They should have the lettering "FORD" stamped into the top of the fog lamp. Some unity units or other period aftermarket lamps used similar mounts that attached to the bumper arm. The best way to mount these is to set the mount in from underneath the apron and mark the holes, then drill from the bottom side up. Justin

Justin, The unity fog lights that i have have mercury written down the top of them. Do you know what the story is on these. Was this an aftermartket that unity did? do you think that would overall make the car incorrect or is it okay to have mercury on the fog lights? Thanks
