Does anybody know the trick to installing the hood springs for a 1947 Mercury?? i have one on that was already there and one that is not on.. Thanks, Deric

It is a good idea to replace both srings when you do one side. They are not expesive. At C&G, the springs for your car, 91A-16789, are $6 each. To put them in place, lower the hood, leaving room to work, and support the front of the hood. Unhook the spings, one at a time, and stretch the new ones until they can be hooked. It does take some pulling, and a rod with a hooked end can help. Be sure hinge mounts on each side are tight, and that the pivots are not badly worn. The springs stretch as the hood is raised to counterbalance the weight. When the springs get weak, the hood can cause knots on your head when you least expect it. Same is true of the trunk lid springs.

The springs are pretty heavy duty and difficult to stretch. if you insert thick washers between each of the coils, you will stretch the spring enough to fit it onto the hinge, then you can remove the washers. If you alternate the side that the washer is inserted, the spring will stay fairly straight. Before you install the springs, check the pivot in the arm for wear. Any play in the pivot will change the geometry enough so that the hood will not reliably stay up.
