1,000 miles is the frequency stated in my owner's manual. If you store your car for the winter, i would do it every spring before you use the car and every 1,000 miles of summer driving.

I don't see anything to oil on my generator, or on my distributor. (these are probably both replacement units) Where should I look for a place to drop a drop of oil?

Since a year of vehicle was not mentioned, from the discussion the reference could be for 1949 and later. Both the generator back bushing and the distributor housing have oil cups. Now, if you have an early 1949 Ford both water pumps also have the oil cups on the top of the housings. And TomO gave good advice (once again).

Jay, look for an oil cup at the back of the generator on your 40. The distributor has an oil cup for the front bushing.

Thanks, Tom. I will look for oil cups again.
