'49 Ford uses a 6 volt coil with no resistor, internal or external.

The 49 Ford should use a coil with an internal resister.

To my knowledge there is no ballast resistor on a 49.

Is there such a thing as a ballast resistor on a 1949 Ford, and if so, where is it located
