Is there a trick to getting the y pipe through the first cross member without having to remove the radiator?

Yes there is a trick on some models the engine needs to be raised to give clearance. You need to supply the year of the car that you are working on for a better answer.

In the past I have jacked up the car and put jack stands under the frame near the cowl. Then I let the suspension hang and maneuvered the y pipe between the spring and the axle. You do a little twisting and turning but you can get it through.
