I have a friend who has a flathead with C6739 stamped on the driver side in the machined area by the intake manifold. Any ideas as to what this means?

That is probably a re-builders stamp.

Thanks, Tom Would you guess that it was a re builder such as a local machine shop etc ? As I recall the engines rebuilt by Ford had an R in front of the number

Joe, I am only guessing, but it would probably have been a re-builder that supplied engines to mechanics and retail outlets like Sears. Jasper was one of these.
