Battery Ground Connection

Have 12v negative ground system. Battery ground cable is connected to starter (engine grounded to body with 2 cables). Everything works great but is this arrangement typical ? I've seen some descriptions that imply battery ground cable goes to body first. Dan

On a negative ground system, Negative goes to ground, Positive to the starter through the starter solenoid. With positive ground, then the reverse is true.

This sounds like a good setup. Either way will work, but I like to run the neg cable direct to the starter,then ground the body to the engine. This reduces chance of failure in case of body to engine cable corrosion.

fla48: Just clarify, as you note, my battery positive goes to the solenoid then on to starter.

We recommend putting an additional ground cable from the central battery cable point, usually the firewall or an engine stud, to one of the starter mounting bolts. For this purpose a cable with two eyelet ends is used. As it is an additional ground point, a 12 volt cable is sufficient to overcome any poor grounds between the battery and the starter. The starter is the highest current part demand of the vehicle, and depending on "casual" ground can starve it due to grease, rust, paint, etc. Poor grounding is one of the biggest cause of problems in any older vehicle.
