I have a rebuilt generator with about 500 miles ( in 2 years) on it. It came from Mac's auto parts. It worked ok at first but after some miles the charge rate went down. I ajusted the third brush to the max, with in two com bars, and at 40 mph I only get about 5 amps max. Don't even think about using the lights. What can it be ? Thanks, Mike.

hi did you ? or you might want to take the brush cover off , so you can clean the comutater.you can use electric motor cleaner,by CRC,and clean up the copper, I do this running, with a strip of wood with a piece of 320 sand paper, you can glue the sand paper to it , let it dry ,and be careful when engine running, I think the brush contact it dirty, see what the copper looks like,it should be clean, and get back to us, hope this helps, 37RAGTOPMAN also see if it threw any solder, you will see signs on the inside of the brush cover,by little particils of solder splatter ,

With that few miles, I wouldn't expect the commutator to be at fault, unless the mica wasn't cut properly when it was rebuilt. It is more likely that there is a poor connection somewhere, or an incomplete ground to the body of the generator. Be sure that your ammeter is OK by checking the current with a substitute meter or a clamp on tool. Also, be sure that the contacts in the cutout are clean.

Bishop, you may have adjusted in the the wrong direction. Up is decrease, down is increase.
