The pinion is adjusted before installing the ring gear using the lock nuts on the shaft, using a scale to observe the amount of tension, which should be between 12 and 16 pounds. Be sure that there isn't excessive lash in the axle shaft gears. Hold one axle shaft securely in a vise and turn the other axle by hand and measure the travel at the keyway end of the axle. It must not exceed .010, or the lash adjustment will not be correct. Install a gasket beteeen the left hand axle housing and the banjo of .008 to .010. and tighten the housing to the banjo. Install the other axle housing with a .004 to .005 gasket. You need to get a back lash ajustment not greater than .008, or less than .003 at the pinion shaft, as measured by a dial gauge. If not, adding a thicker gasket between the left hand housing and the banjo will increase the lash, and a thinner one decreases the lash. If you add to the clearance on one side, you must remove it from the other side, or vice verss, to retain the differential bearing loading. This usually requires several tries.
