Hi all! My 33 is getting hot and I am looking for some help. I have had my water pumps rebuilt by Skip Haney and I am currently in the process of cleaning the waterways out by using vinegar in the cooling system. I ran the engine at idle for about 15min on Saturday and it started boiling over. I am noticing steam at the point where the exhaust meets the headers on both sides of the engine. Could this mean that there is a head gasket leak or is that normal for these ole flatheads? I am running a stock non pressurized system. Thanks! Brad
Thanks! Brad Williamson

Are you sure that what you are seeing is steam and not just an exhaust leak? Steam in that area would indicate a blown head gasket or a cracked block. If the head gasket is in such bad shape to show steam, you should see signs of a leak when the engine is cold. A 33 V-8 usually has aluminum heads and I would not use an acid like vinegar to try to clean the block and radiator. The first thing that I would do is to go to a radiator shop and have them pressure test your system for leaks. Do not let them use more than 6 lbs pressure for the test as it may damage your radiator. Next I would have them test for combustion products in the radiator, indicating a blown head gasket or cracked block. If you cooling system passes those tests, remove the radiator and have it professionally cleaned.

Thanks for the info Tom. The flathead is actually a 35' model. Do they have aluminum heads? Mine are painted and I can really tell what they are made of.
Thanks! Brad Williamson
