I used a bench grinder with a 60 grit wheel, just don't get stupid, grind a little let it cool grind some more & in just a matter of minutes you are done.

Just FYI: Bob Drake sells them with the tabs already ground off.

You can remove them with a fine stone in a grinder or Dremel tool. If they need to be polished, a knife sharpening stone will work. Just go slow, and take off a small bit at a time.

I've never tried to do this, but I would suggest taking them to a glass shop as they usually have wet grinders that should be able to remove them and leave a polished surface in their place.
