What goes here on the clip from the wheelwell to the tailgate hinge? I assume something to keep the tailgate from dropping too fast? http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/oo153/pjsauber/woodietailgate.jpg

MY 4O woodie has parts that look exactly like that and a big spring with a cover made out of canvas or top material connects the TG and the stud on the wheelwell. It is called a counterbalance spring and in my 40 Body book it has a 36 part number so it would be the same for 36 to at least 40 wagons. Part # 68-795720

Deuce: I concur with your reasoning regarding part numbers, but since 38 & 39 woodies mounted their spares on the back of the front seat, they didn't use the assist spring, just the check arms.

Stroker--Good point! mrtexas shouldn't spend any time looking for one off of a 38 or 39! Tomorrow when I am in my shop I will take a picture of the spring and measure it for mrtexas. Maybe someone else like alanwoodiman will chime in here and let us know if the 41-48s used the same setup and spring.

Mrtexas--here is a picture of the spring you are looking for. It is about 18" long and 1" in diameter. I see over on FB you were given Carpenter's phone number, I hope he has one of those for you. Good luck!
