OK, I'll re-phrase my question. How do I replace the lock cylinder cover retaining spring on a '38 trunk handle? Thanks, Gene

I don't know how the spring is held on the 38 handle, but on my 40 Mercury there was a brass sleeve that was pressed on. I just removed the sleeve, repaired the lock cover and pressed the sleeve back on.

I think the '38/'39 handle is different. These have a stainless (rustless) steel skin that has to be removed to access the sleeve on the spring pin. I elected to drill the spot welds and remove the back housing to access the spring.
