Three springs in the photo below. The longest one (91a-16871)is the same for all 1939 Deluxe as well as all 1940 standard and Deluxe. This one is in the repop 'kits'. The short one (91a-16635c)is also supplied in the repop 'kits'. It is about 2 3/4" in length and is suited only for the last and most common(of three latch designs) 1939 Deluxe. The middle spring (91a-16635a)is about 4 3/4" long. It is the elusive one and is suited for the first latch design - 1939 deluxe. That little 'tab'(clip) I'd mentioned in an earlier post is often missing. It is the same as all 1940 passenger cars, #91a-16873.

Mike, Good pic, thanks. You said that the spring currently supplied is the incorrect length. Do you have a number for a replacement spring that is the correct length? Ken

There's a little tab beneath the screw and cup washer that has a hole in to accept the spring loop. I can provide part numbers for the early springs if desired.

Mike, Thanks for the picture. Over the years I've had a couple of early '39's and have never seen that spring that you show as missing. The early '39 that you see in the picture has been under my care since April of '61 and is mostly original. I know that it had some front end damage sometime previous to when I got it and that may explain why this one is missing that spring. Is that spring one that goes missing easily, kinda like the engine pans? Where does the top end of the spring connect? Ken

Here's a picture of both springs installed. be aware that the springs that are currently supplied by the repop stores are not the correct length for the early latches. Mike Kubarth

39 ken, It appears you are absent one spring.
