  Is this what you need?

I would recommend the club restoration book for 38-39 Fords, that can be purchased on this web site. The early 39 does not appear to have the inside latch check mechanism, 91A-16718 as in the photo above . It also does not have the second spring 91A-16635-B. The restoration book has photos of the early hood without the latch check that was added about 12-1-38 to prevent the hood latch from being closed with the hood in the open position, I believe the book photo of the early hood matches your hood. Looks like your very early hood should have just one spring on the latch mech. I would make sure the hood came with the car and the rest of the body is also pre 12-38 date.

THANKS KEN COULD YOU GET A BETTER SHOT OF THE PARTS AS THEY GO TOGETHER?
MY FATHER WAS RESTORING HIS 39 DELUXE WHEN HE PASSED AWAY AND I AM TRING TO FINISH IT FOR MY MOTHER.
ANYTHING YOU CAN DO WILL HELP ME ALOT.
THANKS
DENNIS

If you go to Bob Drake's website and click on his new catalog, page 84 in the Hood section has a diagram of a 40 and shows the parts for a 39. While this is not exactly what you want it might help seeing how the parts go together on the 40 and the spring locations and workings are probably very similar.
It's no fun putting something together that someone else took apart.
Good Luck!

  39 ken,
It appears you are absent one spring.

Here's a picture of both springs installed. be aware that the springs that are currently supplied by the repop stores are not the correct length for the early latches.

Mike, Thanks for the picture. Over the years I've had a couple of early '39's and have never seen that spring that you show as missing. The early '39 that you see in the picture has been under my care since April of '61 and is mostly original. I know that it had some front end damage sometime previous to when I got it and that may explain why this one is missing that spring. Is that spring one that goes missing easily, kinda like the engine pans? Where does the top end of the spring connect? Ken

There's a little tab beneath the screw and cup washer that has a hole in to accept the spring loop.
I can provide part numbers for the early springs if desired.

Mike, Good pic, thanks. You said that the spring currently supplied is the incorrect length. Do you have a number for a replacement spring that is the correct length? Ken

Three springs in the photo below.
The longest one (91a-16871)is the same for all 1939 Deluxe as well as all 1940 standard and Deluxe. This one is in the repop 'kits'.
The short one (91a-16635c)is also supplied in the repop 'kits'. It is about 2 3/4" in length and is suited only for the last and most common(of three latch designs) 1939 Deluxe.
The middle spring (91a-16635a)is about 4 3/4" long. It is the elusive one and is suited for the first latch design - 1939 deluxe.

That little 'tab'(clip) I'd mentioned in an earlier post is often missing. It is the same as all 1940 passenger cars, #91a-16873.
