The caps were metal '39-'48, then plastic, '49-'51. For '52-'59, metal returned. If your master cylinder doesn't fit this pattern, it is likely the unit was replaced by an aftermarket cylinder at some time. As long as the cap has good threads and a working gasket, it shouldn't make a difference if you don't damage it by overtightening.

Hi All--- Hope this finds you all Well!!! --- Question---- '51 Ford---Is Master Cylinder plug supposed to be metal or plastic???---I'm seeing a-lot of plastic!@#,--But am thinking it should be metal!! Thanks All! "Cresty"
