I am having the same problem with a 54 Merc. Is Type F fluid compatible with Type A, or does the whole system need to be drained including the converter? Buford8- Where did you get the info reguarding Dextron as a replacement?

Before I had my Fordomatic rebuilt I used type FA that I bought at Carquest Auto Parts. Since I had it rebuilt I use the modern auto trans. fluid. Hope this helps.

I have researched this and found Dexron to be the proper fluid for the Fordomatic trans. Dexron is available at most auto supply stores and "big box" stores.

The decal on glovebox door states that type A fluid is the proper fluid for the fordomatic, Is this the same as type F or do they make a specific fl. for this?
