Here is what's in the Ford Service Bulletin 1932-1937 For some reason the first page is on the RIGHT, the second page is on the LEFT:

Very slight air pressure is developed in the gas tank sending unit. The pressure travels through a very small tube to the back of the dash gauge. The pressure displaces a red fluid to the front glass tube. More pressure the higher the red fluid less pressure the lower the red fluid.
