I tried to start my '38 Fordor Deluxe yesterday. The engine would not turnover and all I heard was a hi pitch sound. The consensus among my local early Ford friends is the bendix is not operating (spring broke?). One of fellow Ford enthusiast gave me a starter / bendix assembly from a '39 Ford. My questions: Are the two starter assemblies interchangeable and what issues will there be removing and installing the starter assembly? The last question is would it be a better solution to get my original starter assembly rebuilt and by who?

Before trying to replace the starter get your buddies to come over and put the car in gear (probably 3rd) and try rocking the car back and forth. It should "release" the Bendix. Always worrked on my Model A. Paul in CT

1931 Thank you. We rocked the car in 3rd. We heard a small ping as the Bendix released. The car started and I went for a short ride. Is the anything I can do to stop that from happening again? Again thank you!

Ray, For starters (please forgive me) make sure the little bracket is present between the oil pan and the rear bolt of the starter. It helps stabilize the starter. If it is missing, it is available from any of the usual vendors. Ken

"The engine would not turnover and all I heard was a hi pitch sound." Why would it make a hi pitch sound if the bendix was locked-up? I would think that would be the sound of a starter motor spinning, bendix not engaging the ring gear.

Then why did rocking the car do anything?

Ken, the starter bracket is missing. How important is the bracket? I found one online and I can order it later today.

Ray, Most would consider it quite important and it may prevent the problem you just had. The starter is very heavy and this bracket is insurance to keep it aligned correctly. Ken
