Jay, If the other bolt is tight, you should have no problem. The other bolt will provide adequate support. Ken

A couple of the early Ford V-8 vendors that have the Starter Support Bracket are Yesteryear Ford Parts and Dennis Carpenter. The part number for this item is 51A-11140. You are right, it mounts under the through bolt in the inboard side of the starter motor and under the nearest oil pan retaining bolt.

That bracket is also missing on my '40. No problem with the starter......yet! I want to get a proper bracket on. It attaches to the starter at one of the two long thru-bolts that hold the starter together and hold the starter to the engine. Do you think I will be able to simply remove that long bolt and get it right back in without problems? I will try to find a way to support the weight of the starter while doing this.

Ray, Most would consider it quite important and it may prevent the problem you just had. The starter is very heavy and this bracket is insurance to keep it aligned correctly. Ken

Ken, the starter bracket is missing. How important is the bracket? I found one online and I can order it later today.

Then why did rocking the car do anything?

"The engine would not turnover and all I heard was a hi pitch sound." Why would it make a hi pitch sound if the bendix was locked-up? I would think that would be the sound of a starter motor spinning, bendix not engaging the ring gear.

Ray, For starters (please forgive me) make sure the little bracket is present between the oil pan and the rear bolt of the starter. It helps stabilize the starter. If it is missing, it is available from any of the usual vendors. Ken
