VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)

Hi John,
Some years ago, I read about a guy who took his old ford out for its maiden run after years of restoration. He suffered a similar noise, but tried to make it home and a wheel fell off! Apparently he forgot to clean the new paint off the wheel, where the lug nuts fasten. And as the wheel spun, it wore paint away and the nuts came loose. It may be unlikely that this is your problem, but worth a look. Good luck.

Hi Everyone! Sorry for the long delay on following up. Real life got in the way of playing. At any rate, we finally looked at this today. 42oink was right on the money. Mind you, I hadn't touched the car since I wrote my last message here. . .

Finally pulled the hub caps, started to take the lug nuts off, and the front passenger side nuts spun as soon as I put the tire iron on them with no resistance. The driver's side front was even worse, a couple could be loosened by hand. The rear lug nuts were also loose, but not nearly as bad. To be thorough, we did take off the wheels, inspected the bearings, spindles, brakes, etc. We also repacked the bearings; they are newer replacements, but are in good condition. We put everything back together, tightened the lug nuts (well), and took a drive. Problem looks to be solved.

I feel silly waiting for so long to even check the lug nuts, I just assumed this would be a huge project, so I never touched it until my father-in-law was available to help. At any rate, it was better he was there to inspect the things that I still need to learn about.

Thanks to all of you who chimed in. I feel dumb, but we all have to start somewhere. I'll be back with more rookie questions soon.

As 37ragtop posted, wheel bearing generally make a growling sound, not a thumping noise. If you can find a safe place clear of traffic, drive at about 30mph and swerve hard right to left, and the wheel with the problem should get louder under load. if it gets louder turning left, the issue is in the right front.

Thanks very much. There is no shimmy to the car. It was just the thumping.

We are going to get to this project next weekend, so I will follow up with what we discover after next Sunday.

does the car have a shimmy.?
was wondering if you added any air to the tires, if the air compressor tank was not drained, could have aded water to the tires, maybe you have water in the tires,?
hand spin the tires see if they are way out of ballance,,, any flatspots on the tread,?
its along shot, but have seen it happened,
wheel bearing have growl or hum when they go bad,
let hear how you made out,

If you do need wheel bearings, try not to get Chinese made bearings. If you can source N.O.S. bearings use them. From what I have been reading bearings made in China are prone to failure.

This may seem a bit simple but was my first thought. Check your lug nuts. Some times the we overlook the simple stuff looking for a problem. Nice looking car and I like the red wheels. 42OINK

I was searching through previous posts for a recommendation for wheel bearings. Are these correct for what I need: https://thirdgenauto.com/product/new-1928-48-ford-front-wheel-bearings-cups-complete-set/
