Hi Ken, I purchased a Ford Flathead V-8 powered car three years ago with aftermarket aluminum high compression heads on the engine. The use of premium fuel is required to keep the engine knock free. The car has traveled over 12,000 miles with no internal engine problems. Since getting the car I have purchased some stock cast iron heads to put on the engine so it will run without knocking on regular 87 Octane fuel. This is the sweetest running Flathead that I have ever owned. I am extremely reluctant to open up a perfectly good running engine until it is absolutely required.

Ken - Another thing to consider is the amount of corrosion the heads have caused by electrolysis....

Ken, it really depends on what you want to do. No one can really answer your question as there is no information on previous history of these heads. I would only skim enough to make them flat. If you have any doubts, clay the heads without gaskets to determine if the valves will hit. If all good, put the new gaskets on tighten them down and run it. Ken
