You can determine the rear axle ratio by doing the following: Remove all the spark plugs to make the engine easier to turn over Mark the engine crankshaft pulley and a stationary part on the front of the engine with lines that line up Place a mark on one of the rear tires that points to the ground (BDC) Place the transmission in high gear With the car on level ground roll the car one revolution of the tire you have marked Have a helper look at the crankshaft pulley to count the number of turns it makes for one tire revolution This number will be your rear axle ratio

The ratio should be stamped on the bottom of the housing. If I remember correctly it's located near the flange where the torque tube bolts to the rear end.

This is the only numbers I could see stamped into the diff. housing. Looks more like it would be a date? 9 - 3 4 2

34/9=3.7777 (3.78) I don't know what the 2 is.

Why wouldn't they just stamp 3:78?

C'me on, Shane, don't you remember your father's answer: "To make little boys ask questions." Sheesh.

They just stamp the number of teeth on each gear. The earlier answer about turning the engine is more correct because over the years who knows what went into these.

I agree. Mine seems shorter than 3.78 when driving it.

Frank, brings up a good point. Perhaps the rear end was rebuilt at some time and the stamped "two" is a mark of who the mechanic was that worked on the rear.
