Based on all the info. I can find, it appears about half route the hoses one way and about half the other way, everyone reporting good results. We are right back where we started. Merry Christmas!

I had a big brain check in my previous post in this discussion. See this post on he subject. https://www.earlyfordv8.org/forum/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=18&Topic=9623 This shows the action of the air bleed as well as what is in the 41-48 book about heaters.

Bill carry, yes it would be , I can't see what difference it would make but there must have been a certain way Ford did it and for a specific reason. Thanks for responding, Merry Christmas

Took a look at all the 42-48 engine compartment photos I could listed on the current Hemmings website. The routing showed return hoses (firewall to lower right radiator hose) exiting firewall from the top pipe on eight of them, only one with that hose exiting from the bottom. Others were either no heater or different heater. My 48, as I bought it, has the top return also. Would be great to get the authentic story from a knowing source!

Back in the day we always did it like the previous posts say on all makes. I was told that was wrong on my '48 ,changed it and couldn't tell any difference, so I changed it back.

Cold water is denser than hot water, so you would get more heat from the heater if the hot water (head outlet) went in the upper hose and the cold water left from the bottom outlet (lower hose). I doubt that you could feel the difference, but there is an air bleed feature in the Ford heater to prevent an air pocket from blocking coolant flow. This requires that the upper hose is the input to the heater in order to work correctly.

Thanks, I really don't see how it should change either way. Merry Christmas

I own two "48s, a Ford and a Mercury and both have hot water flowing from a head to the upper pipe and the lower to the lower radiator hose on passenger side. Plenty of heat output.
