i have a 48 passenger car. The heater pipes are on the same side and one above the other. My question, does it make a difference how you route the hoses as far as amount of heat you get out of the heater. Thanks and Happy Holidays.. Thanks, Rick

I own two "48s, a Ford and a Mercury and both have hot water flowing from a head to the upper pipe and the lower to the lower radiator hose on passenger side. Plenty of heat output.

Cold water is denser than hot water, so you would get more heat from the heater if the hot water (head outlet) went in the upper hose and the cold water left from the bottom outlet (lower hose). I doubt that you could feel the difference, but there is an air bleed feature in the Ford heater to prevent an air pocket from blocking coolant flow. This requires that the upper hose is the input to the heater in order to work correctly. Tom

Back in the day we always did it like the previous posts say on all makes. I was told that was wrong on my '48 ,changed it and couldn't tell any difference, so I changed it back.

Took a look at all the 42-48 engine compartment photos I could listed on the current Hemmings website. The routing showed return hoses (firewall to lower right radiator hose) exiting firewall from the top pipe on eight of them, only one with that hose exiting from the bottom. Others were either no heater or different heater. My 48, as I bought it, has the top return also. Would be great to get the authentic story from a knowing source!

Based on all the info. I can find, it appears about half route the hoses one way and about half the other way, everyone reporting good results. We are right back where we started. Merry Christmas!
