I have removed the steering assembly on my 41 conv cpe, and noted a 1 3/4" steel collar around the shaft. Need to know the reason for the part. Suggestions ?

If you are talking about the clamp at the bottom of the mast jacket, it clamps the mast (tube) to the steering gear.

Are you talking about Part # 3532 at http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm ? Go to "Parts Drawings" then "Steering Gear" and finally the year of your car. If so, then fordv8j got it right. Charlie Stephens
