Working on my distributor now. Should the vacuum advance unit hold vacuum, or just move with vacuum?

I assume no vac.@ dist means it just doesn't function till ported vac is present. Vac is diff than vac. @ the manifold. The dist. will not work properly if connected to manifold vac. Don't quite understand your ques. ken ct.

I have the vacuum advance unit removed, and was going to apply vacuum to test it.

If it doesn't hold vacuum it has a leak in the diaphragm. Get a new one.
