You usually need to use a pry bar for some friendly persuasion to get it to clear the rail.

Thanks for the replies. I am doing what was recommended and it is still not quite enough. On the driver side I have pried the inner fender panel to give more room to slide the tank. It appears that a spot weld prevents bending the inner panel any more at the rear. Don

passenger inner fender panel may need to be "persuaded" a tad

with a 40 the gas tank must be forced over and up on the drivers side in order to gain clearance for the pass side to drop down. it is a very tight fit!!

I cannot get the gas tank to clear the side rails. It is very close to dropping down but about 1/16 inch or less interference on the passenger side. Suggestions? The car is a very original 40 Ford.
