In some gasket kits that piece is in fact straight. It's fairly easy to bend it into position.

Thanks. I will look again Tuesday night and see if I can figure it out. The gasket piece that I have is not in a u-shape so I guess I bend it into a u and glue it to rear main cap?

If you are talking about P/N 18-6701 oil pan packing, there is a recess in the rear main bearing cap that the cork fits into. There is a drawing of this on page 215 of the 1928-1948 Chassis Parts Catalog. If you have a different Chassis Parts Catalog, it will be on the drawing for the engine. Use Hi-Tack or another gasket sealer to keep the cork in place in the slot while installing the pan.

It almost looks like the u-shaped part of the pan fits into a channel around the crankshaft with no provision for a gasket. ???

I figured out the front and sides but the rear I don't understand. There is a cork piece that I assume is the rear gasket. How does it go in? There is a sharp narrow part of the pan at the rear that appears to go up and partly around crankshaft. Can't figure out how the gasket works. Thanks. 1947 v-8 pickup.
