I thought that the spring might be close enough to be able to adapt it, for lack of other alternatives, and probably worth risking 5 bucks. Finding such parts for the very early Mercs is going to be tough, anyway you look at it, I think.

The 40 Ford and the 41-48 safety catches are different from the 40 Merc and do not use the same spring.

Ford used the same spring from '41 thru '48, so I suspect that it may have been used earlier. The part number for the 41-42 Merc is the same as Ford, 11A-16897, $5 at C&G (800/277-0470). Last month, I helped a friend search for the whole safety latch assembly, as his '46 was missing it. We eventually located one at an old time salvage yard that we use when we found that the latch for that year was not reproduced. The part number for the 40 Ford is 01A-16897. It is also listed for the '41 pickup. C&G shows the whole catch assembly for that vehicle as 01A-16892-A. It may contain the spring.

As far as I know, that spring is not being reproduced. Ford never sold it as a separate part. Mine has never broken, so I don't know of a workaround. Check with some of the vendors that specialize in NOS parts for a replacement latch.
