Dale, I know you’ll agree, the info and photos supplied you by Mike Kubarth are excellent, none better. As you stated, you’re not up to par on all the technology of your ‘40 Ford, so I’ll advise you to purchase the ‘40 Ford book published by the V8Club, available on this website. This book was written by…You guessed it, Mike Kubarth.

Check the numbers on your shock arms against the numbers Kube posted above to determin if you have the correct shocks. There are many slightly different variations.

SHOCK ABSORBERS The Houdaille Hershey Corporation in Buffalo, New York supplied shock absorbers to Ford Motor Company. Both front and rear shock absorbers were adjusted to provide a softer or firmer ride to suit the owner’s desire. Adjustments were made by turning the semi square pointer at the end of the needle valve. Front Shock Absorbers Mounted to the outside of the frame were “lever action” type shock absorbers. Their part numbers were 01A 18045 A (right side) and 01A 18046 A (left side). Special 350666 S2 carriage bolts were installed through the inside of the frame. On the other side 34808 S2 lock washers and 33802 S2 nuts were placed against the shock absorber body. The arms had cast on them “F 837”, Ford script, and, on a boss near the end, the number 10. The bodies were approximately 2 7/8" in diameter. Rear Shock Absorbers Mounted to the bottom of the frame were “lever action” type shock absorbers. Their part numbers were 01A 18080 A (right side) and 01A 18081 A (left side). Special 350667 -S2 carriage bolts were installed through the inside of the frame. On the other side 34808- S2 lock washers and 33802 -S2 nuts were placed against the shock absorber body. The arms had cast on them “F 745” and the Ford script.
