Here is a link to the parts diagram for a '46, not exactly the same, but it is very similar to the '40. Maybe it will help you discover what parts are missing on yours. https://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/t424/craigmca/Ford%20Technical/DSCN1736_zps91138f46.jpg

The 40 linkage is different from the later cars. Here is a link to a PDF copy of the Green book http://norgv8club.org/all-dcouments-indexed/category/16-parts-diagrams The diagram for the 1940 wipers is on page 637. If you don't want the file on your computer, you should be able to open it with your browser. I use Firefox and it will open the file when I click on DOWNLOAD. Section 7 has the page that you want. Paul 40 Ford I believe you have the chrome stantions posts outside, there is a left and right, the linkage is differnt lengths., if my memory is right they attach to the bell cranks on the motor, with a which looks like a 2 funny washer with a spring between them, the linkage arms just slips over the posts, and the washers with the spring locks them on, hope this helps, 37Ragtopman, Maine

Paul, how good are your transmissions on each tower? Is this the clip you are speaking of? https://www.macsautoparts.com/windshield-wiper-transmission-arm-clip-from-arm-to-motor-ford-49-10543-1.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&adpos=&scid=scplp49-10543-1&sc_intid=49-10543-1&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=CjwKCAiA55mPBhBOEiwANmzoQmZJM5tLJCs5cYWsw55Mb86hgehz4fdPzkWqnQONYPGqya_aGnNNwBoCiJAQAvD_BwE Not sure exactly what you are looking for?You can pretty much get everything you need from suppliers.

Bob Drake had the closed car wiper transmissions with linkage. Many aftermarket suppliers have the spring loaded retainer.
