There just was a discussion on this recently. Do a search on Transmission. I will help you by saying that you will be looking for 80-90 W oil -- and with a rating of GL-3 or less. Reason being is GL 4 and above does not offer protection for the brass in your transmission syncro. If you have a Tractor Supply Store near you, they still carry Ford authorized GL-1 for Ford Tractors 1939-1952.

You can purchase SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil API GL-1 from your local NAPA Auto Parts Store. It comes in 1 gallon containers as Part No. 65-201. If they don't have it in stock, they can order it for you.

You don't say where you are located but if its a warm area you might also think about 140 weight gear oil. Don't use the 600 weight that is advertised. That is for use in Model A Fords

nelsb01, GL-4 is just fine for our Ford transmissions. GL-5 is the bad one for the yellow metals. Ken

GL 4 is fine for our old Ford transmissions. Mac Van Pelt rebuilt my 1937 Ford 3 speed transmission and he recommended 140 wt GL4. He is one of the premier Ford trans rebuilders in the country and his recommendation is respected by many.

Well, since I don't make my living as a transmission expert -- I listen to what others say. I was told GL-3 or lower. I found Ford authorized GL-1 and I am using it. Even Bob Drake's catalog says to stay away from oils that harm soft metals. Then I also suggest that you check out your local Marine Store (as in boats) as they carry lots of GL-3.
