Can some one enlighten me on the differences between an Australian car and an American. I have had many conflicting answers. Thanks for the great site.

Apart from the body construction differences (composite steel and wood in Australian bodies versus all-steel [except for upholstery/top attachment wood] in North American bodies), there are two distinctive exterior visual differences. The most noticeable are the exposed mouldings where the quarter panels join the body's back panel on the North American bodies and the metal-finished (smooth) transition of these panels on the Australian bodies. More subtle is the location of the outside door handles (higher and closer together on the Australian bodies). The inside door handles are also located differently. These characteristics show up on the Australian phaeton currently for sale on eBay.

In addition to the inside door handles being located in a different position they might also operate in a different way. On my Australian '32 Phaeton the inside door handles turn rather than pull to open. I was asked whether all Australian Phaetons are this way, but I didn't know the answer. Mine don't have any signs of having been modified. Picture follows:

The door latches and strikers were different, The Australian used an exposed bolt latch with a wedge type striker (similar in design to a closed car striker)
