Sounds like the lock mechanism is in the locked position. If you are checking the latch with the lock mechanism out of the latch, use a small screw driver and insert into the square hole where the lock shaft goes. Twist the screw driver one way or the other to unlock the latch.

Are you sure that it is not locked? This is the side with the locking mechanism.

what makes the latch go in and out to open the door? My '36 is late model. I have all in the picture but the latch won't move in and out?

Here's a drawing of the rt front door latch mech. for your 36 fordor. I am also including an image of the early and late door handles that operate it. Make sure that your handle shaft has the cutout as shown or the handle won't turn.

Does anyone have a detailed photo of the rt front door latch for a '36 Ford 4 door sedan? I think I replaced the spring that was broken but the handle does not open the door.?? Oh me, soooo frustrated! Or maybe instructions to show me how to make it work. Can't figure it out.
